This does look to be a clean car, but the pictures are awful and the ad has no info. No shots of the rust-prone areas other than one of the rockers. They’re asking $9000 for a 535i with 300k on it. I don’t care how clean it is, mint ones with sport seats and under 200k only go for $7-8k. This thing is worth $4k, ish. I’ll probably let the ad hang out a bit, and maybe I’ll offer $3500 or so, see if they’re willing to come back to reality with their pricing. I do really want a 5 speed 535i, especially with the red leather.

God damn what is that guy smoking.

Semi related does anyone know why the fuel gauge on older bmws isn’t evenly spaced?

One of the first BMWs I drove was a white 1985 535is 5 speed. God, I wanted that car badly. A friend bought it and downshifted into second, hard, around a sharp corner in the wet. He was okay but I almost killed him after.

But yeah, $9k? Crack Pipe.

Here’s a guess on the fuel gauge: Who cares if you have 3/4 - full, but you really might want to know the difference between 5/16 and 3/16 - this gives you more detail in the range of travel that actually matters.

Or maybe it’s compensating for otherwise uneven travel of the needle as a result of the float’s behavior in the tank? I’ve had lots of fuel gauges that seemed to move faster or slower in different parts of the range....

Mostly I just want that car. For half the asking price.

That’s possible, I looked at the euro e30 ones when I first started wondering this about my e30 and it goes like 55,40,30,20,R. So I thought maybe they kept the same spacing but just changed the number too 1,1/2,0 but if you look at them side by side they moved the 1/4 mark lower and they made the red bar bigger.

I did end up reading some article about how they engineer the float so that when you fill it up it stays on full for 20-30mi even if its not really “full” to give people peace of mind and compensate for people who keep pumping after the first click.

That’s rather disappointing. At least no one got hurt, but that sucks for the car.

My friend used to daily a silver over red 1986 535i, 5 speed. It was a hell of a lot of fun, and had some sort of chip that we couldn’t identify that made a surprisingly big difference. that was the car that got me hooked on the M30 with a 5 speed, I’ve had two already, in a 533i and a 633i. This one seems to be way cleaner than any I’ve had though.

Right? That’s so far out of regular E28 prices.

I don’t know, but I’ve never had an old BMW with an accurate gas gauge anyway, I usually fill them up when it’s roughly 1/3 of a tank on a normal gauge.

I know, it’s my favourite E28 interior. Those seats are so comfy too.
